Bitterness Over 'Black Hawk Down'
[click link above for source]
by Kevin Sites

She lived here once, in a house behind this pitted dirt alleyway. But now, Maria Osman cannot bear to raise her head as she walks past.

This is, after all, the place where her already difficult life slipped the last few notches into misery, the place where pain can last a dozen years without pause. The place, she says, where an American Black Hawk helicopter fell from the sky and crushed her three-year-old daughter.

"There was not enough of her left to bury," she says, nervously covering her mouth with the end of her hejab (a traditional Muslim head scarf).

When American forces tried to protect the fallen chopper, gunfire broke out and Maria, still nearby the crash site, was hit. It took her two and a half years to recover from the wound.

She pulls back the material covering her right arm to show me a brown, leathery roadmap of scar tissue that runs from above her wrist to below her shoulder. The arm is nearly worthless, Maria says, useful now only as another reminder of that day.

That day, Oct. 3, 1993, became known as the Battle of Mogadishu, when an American mission against Somali warlord Mohammed Farrah Aidid went terribly wrong.

The Somalis shot down not one but two Black Hawks that day -- one of them, call sign Super Six One, would change Maria Osman's life forever.

"I hate them. I hate the Americans," she says, her eyes maintaining their empty sadness rather than shifting to anger. "I hate them for what happened to my daughter. If I saw one I would cut them up into so many pieces."

The crowd that has gathered around us laughs, but some begin to eye me suspiciously. Most of those who live here are part of the Habr Gedir clan -- connected by blood to Aidid. Maria and her husband have three more children, she says, but both parents are jobless so they can't always afford to feed them.

"I have no hope," she says, eyes downcast. "No hope for Somalia."

Murray and Bush to call it quits
By: Kate Lanahan

Murray and Bush on the rocks

Innumerable adolescent girls will be delighted to hear that Chad Michael Murray may soon be on the market again. The WB star (he had parts in "Gilmore Girls" and "Dawson's Creek" before landing his starring role in "One Tree Hill") is rumored to be experiencing some hard times as a newlywed. Murray married his "OTH" co-star Sophia Bush in April amidst rumors of his infidelity. The New York Daily News reports that Chad may have lived up to the phrase "while the cat's away, the mice will play" when Sophia was shooting the teen horror flick Stay Alive. A source tells the paper, "The marriage is all but done. They are separated, and she is going to file for divorce imminently." So much for happily ever after. (By Kate Lanahan)

Now I'm off to figure out if I'm just a serious man whore, or if cheating on my fake wife with my real one is wrong and immoral.

Oh wait, I found what the problem is, my small penis is in.

If anyone could get MTV to bring "Unplugged" out of retirement, it would be Alicia Keys, who just taped her installment of the series last week in New York. She says it was a dream come true, and she can't believe she's about to be in the same company as Eric Clapton, Nirvana and Mariah Carey.

Keys Lends Support to Mentoring Group [24 Jun 2005|10:50am]
NEW YORK - By the time Alicia Keys was 17, she was already an accomplished pianist and singer with a recording contract. But even with all of her talents, Keys says she could have benefited from some mentoring — "to have a place that you can go to, for people to reach out to you and say, `Here's how I did it, or here's what I think.'"

With that in mind, Keys is lending her support to the Florida-based mentoring group Frum Tha Ground Up, which helps children ages 13 to 18 become self-motivated and reach their potential.

Keys, 24, is providing some of the items for an online auction to benefit the group, including VIP passes to her performance at the upcoming Essence Music Festival in New Orleans and a chance to be her guest while she tapes her "Unplugged" album next month. Bidding ends June 30.

Frum Tha Ground Up is critical, Keys said, because it helps children when they are most in need of direction.

"There's a time we all go through at a certain age where you feel like there is no one you can turn to. Sometimes that's really the case. You don't have a father figure, you don't have a mother figure, you don't really have any motivational people in your life," she told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Other items up for bid at the online auction, featured on www.charityfolks.com, include lunch with Halle Berry on the set of "X-Men 3" and a private tennis lesson with Andre Agassi.

Keys said she's tempted to bid on an item herself — tickets to the premiere of a movie starring Morgan Freeman. "I love Morgan Freeman," she gushed. "This might be my chance!"

Al Green meets Lenny Kravitz... in AJ McLean's mental head
June 20, 2005

AJ McLean, everyone's favourite Backstreet Boy apart from Howie and Kevin, was interviewed in today's Metro - to tie in with the release of their comeback album, Never Gone. The interview goes fine right up until the end, when it all gets a tiny bit overheated. (I've read the last couple of paragraphs a few times and I'm pretty sure he's not being ironic).

Just before the strangeness kicks in, AJ is quizzed about the various fashion errors of the Backstreet Boys, and he reassures the world that no such mistakes will be made second time around: "It's a bit more sophisticated this time. We're each doing a white and black look."

Sounds pre-tty snazzy.

AJ's deadpan answer is sort of thing that could only be said by someone whose sense of irony has been wholly dissolved by fame and alcohol. (Don't forget that AJ once said, in all seriousness: "I look good. I feel good and not to sound conceited I sound great").

So, to the final question. AJ is asked, "When can we hear your solo offerings?" - and he replies (deep breath):

"We're busy with Backstreet through the summer so I'm hoping to have a solo single out next spring. It'll be like Al Green meets Lenny Kravitz and Lynrd Skynyrd - something that's not out there at the moment. I want Rage Against The Machine production with pop vocals and live horns. Something that'll really fuck people up."

Whoa there. Why not chuck in a Mariachi vibe, a bit of Roger Whittaker whistling, and some Lightnin' Hopkins foot stomps? Sounds like McLean could be about to produce one of the insanest 'too-much-control-in-one-pair-of-hands' albums ever.

I cannot wait.

Backstreet Boys Poised For Chart-Topping Bow

"New albums by Backstreet Boys and Foo Fighters are both on track to start above 250,000 copies, with the former having a genuine shot to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200.

Based on first-day sales cited by retail chains, chart pundits figure Backstreet's "Never Gone" (Jive/Zomba Label Group) has a shot at touching 300,000 copies in its first week. The group's chances of landing its third No. 1 album depend on how large a second-week decline Coldplay's chart-topping "X&Y" (Capitol) suffers from its opener of 737,000. Of the last six albums to bow at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, the largest second-week dip was 67% for Nine Inch Nails' "With Teeth" (Nothing/Interscope), while the smallest was 42% for Rob Thomas' "...Something To Be" (Melisma/Atlantic).

Foo's "In Your Honor" (Roswell/RCA) should open in the neighborhood of 260,000-280,000, says a source close to the album. The band's largest prior week was 121,000 for fourth album "One By One" the week that it opened at No. 3 in 2002. "

We're Just Glad It Wasn't Chili (NY Times)

We were following ALICIA KEYS through the lobby of the Marriott Marquis on Thursday night, trying to make our way around A BODYGUARD who was simultaneously chasing us away and eating a bag of potato chips, neither of which he was doing very well.

"No," he said to us, as a large chip fell out of his mouth and lay there sadly on the carpet, where it would remain for the rest of the evening.

Ms. Keys, however, told us she was game for "one great question."

Uh, how do you feel when you write a great lyric? (What are you looking at? You try to come up with one on the spot.)

"It's like a certain tingly feeling," she said. "In my hands, in my body. I get very excited. I feel like a kinetic energy flowing - like good sex."

Evil Dead IV: Don't Hold Your Breath

If you are a fan of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead movies, you'd better satisfy yourself with the multiple DVD versions of the original two movies because Evil Dead IV isn't coming any time soon.

Over at IESB there's a video interview with Bruce Campbell in which he stated that Sam Raimi is extremely busy with the Spiderman franchise and who knows when he'd have the time or inclination to do Evil Dead IV.

And in case you think he was just being coy for the interview, I have independent verification of this from a source who spoke with Tom Sullivan. Tom did special effects work on Evil Dead I, II and Army of Darkness and is a friend of Bruce.

Bruce did say during the interview that he and Sam Raimi will be producing the upcoming remake of Evil Dead, but will leave the details to the director since the point is to see a different take on the original material. He joked about having Ashton Kutcher direct and star in the remake, and that if Kutcher wasn't available they'd try to get Ben Affleck, since Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson had already declined. :D

Exclusive: Nick Carter Works His Magic

Nick Carter sure loves the reality TV stars! A source tells PerezHilton.com that the former flame of Paris was spotted getting quite cozy very quickly at Bungalow 8 on Friday night with none other than Hilton-wannbe Brittany Gastineau, star of E!'s Gastineau Girls.

Nick Carter was at Bungalow on friday with no one else but his bodyguard. Lonely enough he finds himself at none other than Brittany Gastineau's table with her posse of trashy girls and an annoying gaysian. If it is not embarrassing enough Brittany asks to take a photo with Carter and was seen going into the bathroom with him. Has he sunk so low in the reality TV meat market that he is trying to score with a Gastineau?
If the walls of Bungalow 8's bathroom could talk! SOURCE

further info about last night's cancellation as mentioned in my update [11 Jun 2005|12:47pm]

Plane problems force Backstreet Boys to cancel trip to Jefferson County

A last minute cancellation Friday from the Backstreet Boys who were coming to East Tennessee.

The band was supposed to appear at Jefferson County's Relay for Life around 11 p.m. But, about 30 minutes earlier, they cancelled because the plane they were on was having mechanical problems.

The plane's loss of cabin pressure forced everyone off, and the band wasn't going to be able to get a flight to East Tennessee in enough time to attend the Relay.

The Backstreet Boys were going to participate in the relay in support of Jefferson County 11 year old Victoria Culpepper, a brain cancer survivor.

Fighting against cancer is an issue that's particularly close to the heart of Kevin Richardson, a member of the band. He became an advocate for the early prevention and treatment of colon cancer after his father died of the disease in 1991.

From Contactmusic: Justin Timberlake and his girlfriend Cameron Diaz have reached an undisclosed settlement with two photographers who accused the stars of harassing them. Saul Lazo and Jose Gonzales alleged that the couple taunted and threatened them before Diaz beat Lazo and took his camera. The alleged attack was caught on camera by another snapper, who sold his pictures to American magazine Us Weekly. Diaz later handed Lazo's camera over to police, insisting she only took it so she could find out who the snapper was.

The photographers blasted allegations from Diaz and Timberlake's publicists that they harassed the couple and jumped out of bushes on them in a bid to stir up an angry reaction, insisting they stood more than 10 feet (three metres) away from them on public property the whole time. The photographers claim they suffered emotional distress and physical harm. Representatives for Timberlake and Diaz have yet to comment.

More Bruce films [01 Jun 2005|10:36pm]

[ mood | happy ]

source: Insomniac Mania

AICN ran an article about Bruce Campbell's latest public appearence where he revealed a few pieces of news about his upcoming projects. He confirmed that a sequel to "Bubba Ho-tep" is in the works, and is at the moment titled Bubba Nosferatu". Apparently there are two production companies willing to pay for the picture, but both Bruce Campbell and series creator Don Coscarelli are letting them fight for the project until they get the maximum amount of money possible to fund it.

The cult actor also confirmed he would make another cameo appearence in "Spider-Man 3" where he would play a character that "annoys the hell out of Tobey Maguire". In other words, not much different to the guy he played in "Spider-Man 2"!

Look out, Hollywood! Bruce is back in a brand new way.

a bit of news [20 May 2005|09:40pm]

From EW.com

THE LOWDOWN Recording on Never Gone, the Backstreet Boys' first album since 2000, began early last year when the Boys — (from left) Howie Dorough, 31; Nick Carter, 25; Kevin Richardson, 33; Brian Littrell, 30; and AJ McLean, 27 — spent time in the studio with R&B producers the Underdogs (Tyrese). But early sessions — including one extraordinarily misguided attempt at Limp Bizkit-style rap — failed to galvanize the group, which had been on sabbatical since McLean entered alcohol rehab in 2001. Their thoughts turned to their old-time hitmaker Max Martin, the Swedish genius responsible for ''I Want It That Way'' as well as career-making singles for 'N Sync and Britney Spears. ''After all the other artists that he worked with,'' explains Dorough, ''the whole pop sound that he created with us got so played out.'' The reluctance was mutual: ''Sometimes you have to think about letting people move on,'' says Martin, who co-wrote and produced Kelly Clarkson's current smash ''Since U Been Gone.'' ''I felt that at first: 'Maybe they should try to work with someone else.'''

But when BMG chairman and CEO Clive Davis heard a Martin demo called ''Climbing the Walls'' (which the songwriter initially intended for the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack), he pegged it as the perfect Backstreet song, and the relationship was renewed. In all, Martin ended up lending a hand on four of Never Gone's 12 tracks, including one of the late-breaking recordings, ''Just Want You to Know.'' ''Basically, the idea is to do 'I Want It That Way' with a little distortion,'' says Martin. ''And not try to be something that they're not.''

The resulting sound, while instantly catchy, is quite different from Backstreet's late-'90s synthesized pop. ''We've shifted into an alternative rock-pop-type sound,'' says McLean. With the title track co-written by Richardson in honor of his late father and another tune (''Just Want You to Know'') about a dead girlfriend, McLean says, ''There's some deep lyrical stuff on this album.''

But will the new direction be too much of a change for their old fans? And have the Boys been away too long? After all, the album's kickoff single, ''Incomplete,'' catapulted to No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 in its second week, but has risen no higher since. ''My worry for us when I fall asleep at night is failure,'' says McLean, whose vice of choice these days is apple tobacco inhaled from a hookah pipe. ''We're experimenting, and our fans that have grown with us hopefully haven't grown apart from us.''

The guys are hopeful that they still have a place in their once-preteen fans' hearts, if no longer on their bedroom walls. One of the group's favorite songs on the new record is ''I Still…,'' a straightforward midtempo love song that Littrell hopes will take on a special added meaning. ''I think it could be the fans saying it about us,'' he says, offering an a cappella rendition of the song: '''Who are you now?/Are you still the same or did you change somehow?... I still need you.' The first time I heard it, I thought, If the fans all over the world could write a song and dedicate it to us, I feel like they would write something like that. I think they would.''

MOST LIKELY TO... Reconsider changing the ''Boys'' half of their name to ''Men'' — three of them are in their 30s, Richardson and Littrell are married, and Littrell has a 2-year-old son.

Release date June 14

Finally! an article about my movie in ENGLISH! [20 Apr 2005|03:15pm]

[ mood | excited ]

This is shorter than most of my updates and has only one smallish picture so I'm not cutting it.
Nikki DeLoach, who plays Mary Jeanne "M.J." Bevans, on TV's "North Shore", has won the lead in "The Net 2.0", the Sandra Bullock-less sequel currently underway in Istanbul, Turkey.
DeLoach plays Hope Cassidy, a young computer systems analyst who is thrown into turmoil when, after arriving in Istanbul to start a new job, she finds her credit cards useless, her bank account empty, and her identity stolen.
Keegan Connor Tracy ["Jake 2.0"] and Neil Hopkins ["Lost"] are the other two key U.S players in the follow-up. A number of local, and notable, Turkish actors have scored roles in the film too, including Demet Akbağ ["Where Are You Firuze?"], Şebnem Dönmez ["The Lost City"], Sener Sen ["The Bandit"] and Kenan Imirzalioglu. Charles Winkler directs.
